Project Description | |||
Descend is a virtual reality, in the HTC Vive, using vertigo (i.e. dizziness characterized by a sensation of whirling motion, either of oneself or of external objects) to lift simple “course” challenges to a terrifying new level. Considering a conventional play area of VR is only 3m by 3m, a player usually needs tricks to navigate through a virtual space which breaks the immersion or induces motion sickness. A distinctive design feature of this game is that it deals with these play?space limitations in a unique way by allowing the player to endlessly explore the virtual world through descending over a spiraling pathway. This particular component makes for a highly immersive, and dizzying descend that can make even the most advanced gamers to surrender after a few meters into the depth. The game initially was made by a small team of IGAD (International Game Architecture and Design) students. *Important note: This (alpha) version was created by IGAD students until Cradle (R&D team of the Academy for Digital Entertainment) picked up the project in order to create a beta version in which they mainly replaced the art. This beta version (created by Cradle) will be submitted to the DVRA as well. Project Motivation
Descend is a room scale VR game wherein the player explores a narrow tunnel downwards, traversing dangerous, and half collapsed ruins to dark undiscovered depths. In essence this is a (maybe the very first) endless runner in VR that does not require you to break immersion, wrapped in a setting of intense vertigo. Starting out as a student project, the game has been showcased and tested during several demo’s, for example during a VR expo on the Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven. Given the hilarious and enthusiastic reactions of a diverse set of players the game has already proven its success and now has the potential of being published as a promising VR entertainment game.
