Project Description
Project Dive is a virtual reality experience that lets you explore underwater environments. It is part of an EU-funded project named Green Bubbles, dedicated to recreational SCUBA diving. The game is aiming at school kids and (potential) divers to experience the impact of sustainable diving on the environment. The goal of Green Bubbles is to maximize the benefits associated with diving, while minimizing negative impacts, thus achieving the environmental, economic and social sustainability of the system.

The player moves around underwater by using the controllers, to explore the area and discover the ocean, different species of fish, and vegetation.

The environments are built based on real life locations using photogrammetry data collected by marine biologist traveling around the world.

The Green Bubbles project is funded by European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the Marie Sklodowska-Curie grant agreement No 643712. Green Bubbles is run by a consortium of nine entities, including universities, research organisations, educational organisations and SMEs from Italy, the Netherlands, Malta, Turkey, South Africa and the United States.

* Important note: This version is the beta version of the project, created by Cradle (R&D team of the Academy for Digital Entertainment). The alpha version has been created by IGAD students of the NHTV. In order to credit them for the work they have done, the alpha version will be submitted to the DVRA as well by the students.

Project Motivation
This project is a unique co-creation between students, researchers and R&D team resulting in an immersive experience to create awareness for impact of diving on the environment. The goal is to maximize the benefits associated with diving, while minimizing negative impacts, thus achieving the environmental, economic and social sustainability of the system.

By using terrain photogrammetry data from marine biologists (obtained off the coast of Italy) a realistic virtual underwater environment was being created. The experience features a flexible and heavily optimized swarm behavior system used to simulate all fish. Free movement within this environment was added by using the controllers as an underwater propeller.

This immersive experience is brought to life by Cradle (R&D team of the Academy for Digital Entertainment) and IGAD students (International Game Architecture and Design). It is created for the HTC Vive and still a work in progress as we are planning on adding gameplay for research purposes.
NHTV showcased the Dive experience at the Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven. It was also exhibited at the Genova Science Festival 2016, where many people played the simulation, and clearly enjoyed the experience. Every visitor from young to old loved this beautiful virtual underwater world, felt like they were really there and people did not want to get out of the ‘water’! It has the potential of being part of school programs or diving communities all over the world to raise awareness for sustainable diving.
