Project Description
A virtual museum was created by Cradle (R&D team of the Academy for Digital Entertainment) in order to conduct research, specifically designed for the Samsung Gear VR. In this virtual environment users are being exposed to interactive art compositions of stunning Japanese paintings wile moving by use of a joystick within the museum. To create a unique and immersive experience, tailor made music was composed for each piece of art in the museum. While approaching a painting, music starts to play.

The objective of the latest study was to find whether differences in audio (i.e., interactive or non?interactive) and movement types (i.e., fixed or free) had an impact on the experience of presence for the user in a virtual environment that represents a museum. The audio variable is researched on behalf of Musica Nova, a company that produces music for new forms of media and composed the actual interactive music in the VR museum. The results of this component illustrated that interactive music increases feelings of engagement and presence. As to the movement types in a virtual museum, users indicated that free movement caused for a more engaging virtual environment.

Project Motivation
This specific virtual museum is unique because of the free movement possibilities in a virtual environment and because of bringing a new dimension of experiencing art by adding interactive music. As the research results show that this leads to a more engaging experience it opens up new opportunities for the cultural sector. Museums can create new experiences for their existing expositions, they can open up new market opportunities by bringing the virtual museum to the audience, or they can even create non existing fictitious locations or expositions.
